Flea Market Man
An image from last Saturdays trip to the flea market. I had walked through the market and was headed out when this fellow caught my attention. I loved his gaze, cane, cigarette and glasses case, what an interesting character.

Parking
Spent some time a while back in a parking deck at the hospital in Carrollton. It was an early morning with not a lot of traffic and some good light. I have always enjoyed photographing in parking decks. There are always some good images to be had.

Romaine Johnson
Romaine Johnson was the owner of Bob's Place, a biker bar in Sunset, South Carolina. It was famous all across the country until it burned a few years back. I was lucky enough to photograph here a few times over the years. She was a very spicy woman and ale=ways a pleasure to be around. She passed on August 8, 2019 at 96 years old. I just looked at her obituary and found my image of her there. See below.

RIP Ricky Needer
I just found out that my good friend Ricky Needer passed away about a year ago. I sure will miss him! He was one of my closest friends during my time in Apalachicola. We spent a lot of time together for about 8 years, all of them fun! Rest in Peace good buddy!

Joe Sapp Morning Brew
Joe was one guy I never really got to know. He was very quiet, in fact I'm not sure I ever heard him say a word. He really liked his beer and was rarely seen without one. He was one of the regulars around Eastpoint Florida. He was always out very early and always had a beer. I'm not sure what happened to him but he sort of disappeared. This is my favorite photo of him. Below is an image of him with Carl Sanders, they were absolutely toasted!!

People of the Bay
These images were made in 2012 on my third trip to Apalachicola Bay. I had photographed most of these folks the day before as they were hanging out drinking and talking. I told them to come by the next afternoon and I would bring a white backdrop and flash to make some more formal portraits. Almost all of them came and we had a blast photographing for a few hours. This was the beginning of a years long relationship with the people around Apalachicola Bay. Sadly a lot of the p

Carl and Bruce
Carl and Bruce enjoying one of the bays favorite past times, chilling with a cold one. These two were great friends throughout the older days when the bay was open. I did see Carl out oystering a few times, not sure what Bruce did. This was the beginning of the end around 2015, still a few years to go before the bay was closed.

Mitchell Cain
My old friend Mitchell who was always up to being photographed no matter what. I really can't think of a time he said no. The image in his trailer was the first I ever took of him back in 2012. I had come to deliver the print of his Dad after he passed and walked into the scene above. The lower scene was with his new puppy and after he had been forced to move his trailer. I am putting the image of his Dad below, probably the best portrait I will ever take.

Saint George Island
An early morning image from the east end of St. George Island. I was teaching a workshop and headed to the east end of the island in the state park. We weren't sure what we might find and were very surprised to see a fogbow over the water. It made for a great image. One more from the bayside of the island. It was late afternoon just before sunset in an area I had photographed often and it didn't let me down. The light was fantastic and made for a fantastic image.

Oystermen
A couple of oystermen portraits from the early days in Eastpoint. This is probably the first time I got up close with the people of the bay. It led to a long time of great friends and fun around Apalachicola Bay. I am hoping that these folks will come back once the bay gets opened back up, if it ever does.

Hoyt Thompson
Hoyt was one of the first oystermen I got to know well. I Just found out he passed away in 2023 at the age of 89. He was one of the friendliest people I've known. He had been oystering his whole life and had no plans on quitting. In almost every photo I took of him he had a cigareete in his hand or mouth. Hopefully he is oystering in heaven.

Roger and Derick
Roger Mathis and Derick Lolly oystering on Apalachicola Bay back in the day. Back then there would be a 100 boats out there, now just a few. Roger and Derick were out there everyday working hard. I know Roger is out there now but I'm not sure about Derick. Below is a portrait of the two of them launching the AP211 to hit the beds. These were the good old days and they were numbered!

Oysters
Oysters are back on Apalachicola Bay. The bay reopened on January 1, 2026 for a limited time. These images are from the 20 teens when the bay was still wide open. Hopefully it will get back to this soon. It has been 5 years since the bay was open. Back in the day there would be a hundred boats on the bay almost everyday, now any amount will be good. I will be down there in March or April to give it my last hurrah, hoping to see some old friends from the past.

Turtle on the Bed
This has aways been my favorite image made with Turtle back in the day. I absolutely loved the light. It was captured in an old friends home in their bedroom. The light was from a window with everyting else very dark. Everything is just visible and yet dark enough to be very mysterious. I have sold a couple of these prints over the years. I think I'm gonna print one for my home.

Turtle and Chair
A very interesting image of Turle from around 1979, taken with Kodak Infrared film at an old home near where I lived in Marietta. The infrared film lightened her skin and sort of softened up the entire scene. I'm not sure I ever used that film again after this shoot, pretty sure I didn't. Back then I did all my own processing and printing in black & white. I had a darkroom in my basement.

Turtle Marietta Square
Another image of Turtle from a shoot we did on Marietta Square back in the day. We usually shot something at least once a week. It never really mattered where , when or what the idea was, she always came through. I could always count on at least one great image.

Turtle and Jade
An image captured around 1977 or 1978 in an old abandoned house in Woodstock, Georgia. Turtle was my muse for many years when I was in Photography School at The Art Institute of Atlanta. She was one of the most beautiful girls I had ever seen. We worked together all through school and for a while after. Over the next few posts I will continue to show some of our work together.

Opal Hilliard
I first met Opal while cruising around Taylorsville, GA. looking for photo opportunities. She lived in an old farm house that was very interesting. I knocked on the door and talked to her about photographing around her house, she said yes so I immediately asked to photograph her, she agreed. We came to be friends and it was much later that I met Albert, her husband. I went on to photograph her and her daughter later on. I enjoyed photographing inside her home. She had some wi

Albert's Overalls
One more from Albert Hilliard's home. This says everything about how Albert lived. I really loved the two crosses and the inovative deadbolt on the door. This was one of the last trips I made to his home.
